Island Hopping Indonesia: Komodo vs Gili vs Raja Ampat

Komodo, the Gili Islands and Raja Ampat are Indonesia's three main island-hopping regions and they suit different travellers. Gili is the cheapest and easiest — hours from Bali, no park fee. Komodo is the balanced middle: one flight, 2–4 day boat routes. Raja Ampat is the most remote and most expensive.

01

The comparison table

Almost every traveller planning an Indonesian island-hopping trip ends up weighing these three. The honest differences are about access cost, water time and how remote you are willing to be — not about which reef is "better".

What the fee difference actually means

This is where the three regions diverge most sharply, and where most comparison articles are wrong. Komodo's national park entry under PP 36/2024 is IDR 550,000 - 650,000 per foreign visitor per visit, flat, with trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling included.

Raja Ampat is genuinely more expensive at the gate. As of 2026, foreign visitors are charged an entrance fee of IDR 1,000,000 per person. This fee is separate from accommodation, transportation, and other travel expenses.

The Gilis have no equivalent. There is no national-park-style entry ticket for Trawangan, Meno or Air; you may pay small harbour levies and environmental charges folded into accommodation or dive prices, but nothing you need to budget as a line item.

03

Water time per day — the metric nobody publishes

Cost per day is the wrong comparison. What differs most is how many hours you actually spend in or beside the water versus in transit.

Region and formatSites per dayTypical hours in the water per dayTransit character
Komodo — 3D2N liveaboard3–42–3 hoursSailing between stops; you sleep on the move
Komodo — day trip from Labuan Bajo31–1.5 hoursLong speedboat legs eat the day
Gili — half-day hopping boat3–4 snorkel points1.5–2 hoursShort hops, minutes apart

Raja Ampat — liveaboard3–4 dives3–4 hoursLong repositioning legs, often overnight

Best for

Choose Gili if you have three to five days, you are already in Bali or Lombok, you want turtles without a flight, or your group includes people who do not want to sleep on a boat. It is the lowest-friction option in Indonesia and the only one of the three with essentially no entry cost.

Choose Komodo if you want the widest variety in the shortest window: a large reptile you cannot see anywhere else on earth, a genuinely famous viewpoint, a pink beach and reliable manta drift, all within a single 3D2N route from one flight out of Bali. It is the balanced middle on cost, access and effort, and the reason it dominates first-time Indonesia itineraries.

Choose Raja Ampat if diving is the point of the trip, you have seven nights or more, and the permit and airfare cost is acceptable. Do not choose it for a first Indonesian island-hopping trip on a one-week schedule — the transit alone will consume two days of it.

Combining them: Bali plus Gili plus Komodo works comfortably in two weeks. Adding Raja Ampat to that pushes you toward three. If you are weighing a Komodo route specifically, our day trip versus overnight cost and time comparison sets out the trade-off, and the FAQ hub covers the recurring practical questions. Vessel classes and 2027 rate bands for the Komodo circuit are set out in our rates and charter pricing page.

Planning the Komodo leg

If Komodo is the region you have settled on, the next decision is format and dates rather than destination. Komodo Luxury has run island-hopping departures from Labuan Bajo since 2015 and can advise on which 2027 windows suit your priorities — manta density, calm sea, or lower crowding. Komodo fees per PP 36/2024. Raja Ampat fees per marine park authority and regency tourism sources as reported January–March 2026; the visitor-ticket validity period is not clearly published. Flight, ferry and fast-boat fares are market ranges that move with season and operator. Last reviewed 1 August 2026.
