This hub answers 100 real questions about Komodo island hopping across ten themes: the route, Padar, Pink Beach, dragons, snorkelling and diving, boats and cabins, costs and park fees, season and sea state, getting there, and families and safety. Figures are sourced and ranges are given honestly where no official number exists.
Every answer below reflects how the Komodo circuit is actually run out of Labuan Bajo, with fees verified against PP 36/2024 and estimates labelled as estimates. Where a number is disputed between sources, we say so instead of picking one.
1. The route and itinerary
Which three islands are in the “3-island” tour?
Padar, Komodo or Rinca for the dragon trek, and Pink Beach. Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong, Taka Makassar, Karang Makassar, Siaba and Kanawa are supporting stops.
Is “3-island tour” an official park designation?
No. It is a commercial label. The park does not designate a three-island route, and different operators fill the three slots slightly differently.
How many stops are on a 3D2N route?
Typically seven to ten, counting short snorkel and viewpoint stops alongside the three headline islands.
Why does the itinerary order change?
Tide and wind. Karang Makassar is a drift site, so it swaps position with Taka Makassar depending on which way the current is running that afternoon.
What is the longest sailing leg?
The overnight passage from the Kalong anchorage to Padar, roughly three to four hours, done while guests sleep.
Can I customise the order of stops?
On a private charter, within what tide and daylight allow. On a shared open trip the schedule is fixed for all cabins.
What is Kalong and why do boats stop there?
A mangrove islet where thousands of flying foxes leave the roost at dusk. It is also a sheltered anchorage correctly positioned for the overnight run to Padar.
What gets cut when a schedule slips?
The nearest, shortest stops — usually Kanawa or Kelor. Padar and the dragon trek are protected because they are time-critical.
Is 4D3N meaningfully different from 3D2N?
Yes. The fourth day is a weather and fatigue buffer, and it makes visiting both Rinca and Komodo Island feasible.
Do all operators use the same route?
The skeleton is near-identical because geography dictates it. What differs is vessel speed, time spent at each stop, and which dragon island is used.
2. Padar Island
How many steps are on Padar?
About 800–840. Published counts include 800, 815, 816 and 838; no official count exists.
How long is the climb?
Twenty-five to thirty-five minutes to the main viewpoint for an average adult; twenty to sixty minutes across published ranges.
How high is the viewpoint?
Roughly 180–200 m for the classic three-bay deck. Published figures range from 165 m to 370 m and none cite a survey.
How many viewpoints are there?
Four practical terraces: the top of the stairs, the main three-bay deck, a higher ridge, and a far peak. Only the main deck is widely named.
What time is sunrise on Padar?
Between 05:31 and 06:18 WITA depending on month, with civil first light 20–25 minutes earlier.
How many beaches can you see?
Three crescent bays from the main viewpoint: white, pink and dark volcanic grey-black sand.
Are there dragons on Padar?
No resident population. Padar is visited for the ridge, not for wildlife.
Is there water or a toilet on Padar?
No. No shade, no water source, no toilet, no shop. Everything comes from your boat.
Can you do Padar at sunset?
Yes on overnight itineraries, and it is quieter, but the descent happens in fading light on loose rock.
What shoes do I need?
Closed shoes with grip. The final section above the stairs is loose rock where flip-flops cause most falls.
3. Pink Beach and the other beaches
Why is Pink Beach pink?
Red-pigmented foraminifera shells and red organ-pipe coral fragments mix with white coral sand.
Is the pink real or edited?
Real but subtle. Strongest at the wet waterline in soft light; most viral photographs have heavy saturation applied.
What is the best hour for the colour?
Before 09:00 or after 16:00, ideally on a falling tide. Between 11:00 and 14:00 it washes out.
Is there a pink beach in Bali?
No. Searches for one usually mean Komodo’s Pink Beach or Pink Beach (Tangsi) in south-east Lombok.
Can you snorkel at Pink Beach?
Yes. Reef starts close to shore over roughly 5–20 m across the wider site, with light-to-moderate current, suitable for all levels.
Are there facilities at Pink Beach?
None permanent. Souvenir vendors sometimes moor offshore in small boats.
What is Taka Makassar?
A crescent sandbar that appears and reshapes with the tide, visited for swimming and photographs, usually near the manta stop.
Is Kelor worth the stop?
As an opening stop, yes. A 15–20 minute hill climb and an easy beach snorkel within an hour of the harbour.
What is Siaba known for?
Turtles. It is a sheltered bay used for morning snorkelling and night dives, sometimes called Turtle City.
Which beach is best for non-swimmers?
Kanawa or Siaba. Both are sheltered with gentle entry and the calmest water on the standard route.
4. Komodo dragons
Where do you actually see dragons?
Rinca at the Loh Buaya station and Komodo Island at Loh Liang, both on ranger-guided treks.
Rinca or Komodo Island?
Rinca for efficiency and concentrated sightings; Komodo Island for a longer, wilder hike.
Are sightings guaranteed?
No operator can guarantee wildlife, but rates on guided treks are very high — one operator publishes above 95% for Rinca.
How long are the treks?
Rinca: 30–45 minutes short, up to 2 hours long. Komodo Island: 1–1.5 hours short, up to 3 hours on the longest routes.
Do I need a ranger?
Yes, mandatory and enforced. Rangers typically accompany groups of around five.
What is the elevated boardwalk on Rinca?
A raised walkway at the rebuilt Loh Buaya station allowing viewing from above ground level before the trek moves onto natural trail.
What time of day is best?
Early morning. Dragons are ectothermic and bask in cooler hours, retreating to shade by early afternoon.
Are Komodo dragons dangerous?
They are large wild predators and must be treated as such. Follow ranger spacing instructions exactly and never separate from the group.
Can children join the trek?
Yes, on the short flat Rinca loop with strict adherence to ranger instructions. Longer Komodo Island routes are unsuitable in the heat.
How much does the dragon trek cost?
Park entry of IDR 250,000 for foreign visitors includes trekking; ranger accompaniment is charged separately at IDR 80,000–200,000 per small group.
5. Snorkelling and diving
Where do you see manta rays?
Karang Makassar (Manta Point) in the central park, at 8–18 m with gentle-to-moderate drift, and Manta Alley in the south.
Can snorkellers see mantas?
Yes. Karang Makassar is shallow enough for snorkellers and is one of the few manta sites in Indonesia where that is true.
When is manta season?
Peak December to March when plankton-rich water concentrates them, though mantas are present year-round.
Which dive sites are for advanced divers only?
Castle Rock, the Cauldron and Tatawa Kecil, all with very strong current. Castle Rock typically requires Advanced Open Water plus 30–50 logged dives and a reef hook.
Which sites suit beginners?
Siaba Besar, Pink Beach, Sebayur and Tatawa Besar — sheltered or gently drifting, from about 5 m.
What is the water temperature?
North and central: 27–29 °C November–April, 26–28 °C May–October. Southern sites drop to 21–25 °C during the June–September upwelling.
What is visibility like?
Roughly 15–30 m in the north and centre, 10–20 m in the south where upwelling reduces clarity.
How many dive sites are there?
No official count. Specialist operators work with around 18 core sites, or 30–40 counting variants.
Is diving included in liveaboard prices?
No. Diving is always a separate package with its own equipment, guide and tank charges.
Is snorkelling gear provided?
Mask and fins are standard on overnight boats. Wetsuits and underwater cameras usually are not.
6. Boats, cabins and comfort
What is a phinisi?
A traditional Indonesian wooden sailing vessel type, handbuilt by Bugis shipwrights, now fitted with engines, cabins and modern amenities for charter use.
How many guests do these boats carry?
Commonly 10–16 on the Komodo circuit. Larger shared vessels in the market carry 20–35.
Do cabins have air conditioning?
On superior and luxury vessels, yes, usually with ensuite bathrooms. Standard open-trip boats may have fans only.
Is there Wi-Fi on board?
Rarely reliable. Mobile signal is intermittent through much of the park and disappears entirely at several anchorages.
Is there electricity for charging?
Yes on most vessels, though generator hours may be limited overnight. Bring a power bank.
What is the food like?
Full board, usually Indonesian and Western dishes prepared fresh on board. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with notice.
Is alcohol available?
Generally not included. Some vessels allow you to bring your own; premium wine and spirits are charged separately.
Can I get a private cabin on a shared trip?
Usually yes, subject to availability and often at a single supplement.
How rough is the overnight sailing?
Mostly sheltered water and anchorages. Passages are scheduled at night deliberately, which is gentler than a day boat at speed.
What should I pack?
Grip shoes, reef-safe sun protection, a head torch, motion-sickness medication, a light layer for early mornings, and a dry bag.
7. Costs, fees and booking
What is the Komodo National Park entrance fee?
IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit under PP 36/2024. Indonesian visitors pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 on weekends and public holidays.
Why do some pages say IDR 650,000?
That is a bundle of the park charge, regional retribution and ranger or trail-management fees — not the regulation.
Is there still a IDR 3,750,000 conservation fee?
No. That 2022 proposal was withdrawn and is not in force.
How much is a 3D2N shared trip?
Roughly IDR 3,000,000–4,500,000 standard, IDR 4,500,000–7,000,000 superior, and IDR 8,000,000–15,000,000 for a luxury phinisi cabin.
How much is a private charter?
Roughly IDR 30,000,000–80,000,000 per night depending on class, covering the whole boat, crew, chef and meals.
When does charter beat buying cabins?
Generally above six to eight guests, at which point the fixed nightly rate divides into a lower per-person figure.
Are park fees included in the trip price?
Sometimes. Ask explicitly and get the answer in writing before paying a deposit.
How far ahead should I book?
Six to twelve months for July–August and manta-season dates; two to three months for April–June and September–November.
Is there a daily visitor cap?
A 1,000-visitor daily cap with morning and afternoon slots is reported as operational from 2026. Its precise legal instrument is not confirmed publicly, so book ahead.
What is not included in a quote?
Typically park fees, diving, alcohol, crew gratuities, hotel nights and flights.
8. Season, weather and sea state
What is the best time to visit Komodo?
April–June and September–November for the calmest sea and best visibility.
What is peak season?
July–August. Visibility is good but the open straits and the water around Padar are windier, and rates are highest.
What happens in December–March?
Monsoon. Roughest sea, most rain, some vessels in maintenance, real cancellation risk — and peak manta density.
Is the rainy season a bad time to go?
Not automatically. It is the best manta window and the cheapest period. It is a bad time if your dates are rigid and you cannot absorb a cancelled stop.
How rough does it get?
Conditions vary from glassy in sheltered bays to short, steep chop in the open straits, particularly on the Padar approach in July–August.
Do trips get cancelled for weather?
Individual stops are dropped more often than whole trips. A 4D3N route with a buffer day absorbs this better than a 3D2N.
Is seasickness common?
It affects some guests on the open legs. Medicate before departure rather than after symptoms begin, and choose shoulder season if you are prone to it.
When is visibility best?
April–June and September–November, in the 15–30 m band across northern and central sites.
Is the water cold?
Not in the north and centre at 26–29 °C. Southern sites can drop to 21–25 °C during the June–September upwelling — bring a thicker wetsuit if diving there.
What about the wind at Padar?
The ridge is exposed and can be windy year-round, most noticeably July–August. It is welcome on the climb and unhelpful for photographs.
9. Getting there and logistics
What is the nearest airport?
Labuan Bajo (LBJ), Komodo Airport, on Flores.
How long is the flight from Bali?
About 1 to 1.5 hours non-stop from Denpasar.
How long from Jakarta?
About 2 to 2.5 hours non-stop.
Which airlines fly there?
Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and the Lion Air group have served the route. Frequencies change seasonally — reconfirm before booking a boat.
How much are flights?
Bali–Labuan Bajo one way roughly IDR 600,000–900,000 promotional and IDR 900,000–1,500,000 typical. Jakarta–Labuan Bajo roughly IDR 900,000–2,200,000.
Can you reach Komodo by boat from Bali?
Only via multi-day sailing routes of four to six days. There is no practical ferry service for travellers on a schedule.
What time do boats depart?
Commonly around 10:00–10:30 for 3D2N routes, earlier for day trips. A delayed flight that misses departure is usually not refundable.
Do I need a hotel night in Labuan Bajo?
Often yes on the arrival side, to protect against flight delays. On the return side, boats typically dock around midday.
Are airport transfers included?
On most overnight packages, yes. Confirm whether the transfer covers the airport or only a hotel pickup.
Is there an ATM and pharmacy in Labuan Bajo?
Yes, in town. There is nothing of the kind once you are in the park, so buy medication and cash before boarding.
10. Families, safety and practicalities
Is Komodo suitable for children?
Yes, with the right route. Short Rinca treks, calm-water snorkel stops and a slower pace work well; the full Padar ridge in midday heat does not.
What is the minimum age?
Operator-dependent rather than regulated. Discuss ages before booking so the route and safety briefing can be adjusted.
Are life jackets provided?
Yes on reputable vessels, along with a safety briefing at departure. Ask to see the equipment if you are travelling with non-swimmers.
Can non-swimmers join?
Yes. Sheltered stops such as Kanawa and Siaba allow supervised shallow entry, and crews can keep a tender close during snorkel stops.
Is there a doctor on board?
No. Vessels carry a first-aid kit and crew trained in basic response. Serious cases require evacuation to Labuan Bajo.
Is there a decompression chamber nearby?
Facilities in the region are limited. Divers should carry dive insurance covering evacuation and hyperbaric treatment.
What about mobile signal and emergencies?
Coverage is intermittent and absent at several anchorages. Vessels carry radio and satellite communications for emergencies.
What should I not do around the dragons?
Do not separate from the group, do not crouch or run, do not carry uncovered food, and inform your ranger if anyone in the group has an open wound.
Is reef-safe sunscreen required?
Not legally mandated, but strongly advised. Conventional formulations contribute to coral stress in shallow snorkel areas.
Who do I contact to book?
Komodo Luxury, operating from Labuan Bajo since 2015, on WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or at [email protected].
