How Many Islands Do You Actually Visit on a Komodo Boat Tour?

A standard 3-day, 2-night Komodo boat tour stops at 8 to 10 named places, but you only walk on land at 3 or 4 of them: Padar, a dragon island (Rinca or Komodo), Pink Beach, and usually Kelor or Kanawa. The rest are in-water or from-deck stops. A one-day speedboat tour reaches 4 to 6 stops; a 4D3N reaches 11 to 13.

The phrase “3 island tour” is the single most misread label in Labuan Bajo. It does not mean the boat visits three places and goes home. It is shorthand for the three islands that carry the itinerary — the viewpoint island, the dragon island and the pink sand — with a chain of shorter snorkel and anchorage stops sewn between them because the sailing legs have to be filled with something. Below is the honest count, stop by stop, with how long you are actually there.

What a 3D2N boat tour actually stops at

This is the classic Labuan Bajo round trip as run by most operators, including the vessels on this site. The order of Karang Makassar and Taka Makassar swaps routinely with tide and wind — a crew changing the order is reading the water, not improvising.

StopDayWhat happens thereTypical time on siteDo you set foot on land?
Kelor Island1Short hill climb, calm swim off the sand60–90 minYes
Manjarite1Sheltered snorkel over a shallow reef slope45–75 minUsually not
Kalong Island1Flying foxes leave the roost at dusk; overnight anchorageDusk + overnightNo
Padar Island2Sunrise ridge climb to the three-bay viewpoint90–120 minYes
Pink Beach2Beach landing and shallow snorkel60–90 minYes
Komodo or Rinca2Ranger-led dragon trek90–120 minYes
Karang Makassar (Manta Point)2Drift snorkel over the manta cleaning area45–60 minNo
Taka Makassar2Sandbar that appears and disappears with the tide30–45 minTide-dependent
Siaba Besar / Turtle City3Calm turtle-and-macro snorkel, common check stop45–60 minNo
Kanawa Island3Last swim and house reef before the run home60–90 minYes

Time on site is the operational window used on shared 3D2N departures. Private charters can stretch any one stop and drop another.

Count the rows and you get ten. Count the landings and you get five at most, four on the majority of departures because Taka Makassar is often under water when you arrive. That is the gap between what a brochure promises and what your legs remember.

How the count changes with trip length

FormatNamed stopsLand stopsIslands you photograph from deck onlyRealistic hours ashore
One-day speedboat4–62–33–53.5–5 hours
2D1N6–83–45–85–7 hours
3D2N8–104–510–158–11 hours
4D3N11–135–715–2012–16 hours

Hours ashore counts only time with your feet on an island, not sailing, snorkelling or eating.

The number that matters is the last column, not the first. A day tour that claims six stops gives you under five hours on land; a 3D2N with ten stops roughly doubles it while removing the 06:00 speedboat transfer and the 17:00 rush back to the harbour. This is the same arithmetic behind the cost-per-hour figures on the day-trip comparison page.

Which islands are actually inside the national park

Komodo National Park covers about 1,817 km² of land and sea, was inscribed by UNESCO in 1991, and holds more than 1,000 reef fish species and more than 250 coral species. Its three main islands are Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Everything else on the itinerary above is either a smaller islet inside the park boundary or, in the case of Kelor and Kanawa, close to Labuan Bajo and outside the dragon zone. That distinction matters for one practical reason: your PP 36/2024 entry ticket of IDR 250,000 for foreign visitors buys access to the park area, and stops outside it are not covered by it.

Why operators do not simply add more stops

Sailing legs are the constraint. Labuan Bajo to Kelor is about an hour. Kalong to Padar is a 3–4 hour overnight passage that exists precisely so that you wake up already in position for first light. Padar to Pink Beach is another 1–1.5 hours, Karang Makassar to Taka Makassar only 20–30 minutes. Add a stop and something else loses an hour, usually the dragon trek or the last snorkel. A boat advertising fourteen stops in three days is either counting things it sails past or cutting every stop to twenty minutes.

How to read an itinerary before you book

  • Count landings, not stop names — ask how many islands you physically walk on.
  • Ask for the departure and return times on day one and day three; a 3D2N that returns at 12:00 has two and a half usable days, not three.
  • Check whether the dragon trek is on Rinca or Komodo Island — the sailing time and the trek length differ.
  • Ask whether Taka Makassar is listed as a landing or a sighting; honest operators say it depends on the tide.
  • Confirm whether park fees are inside the fare or collected separately on the day.

Frequently asked questions

How many islands are in the Komodo 3-island tour?

Three islands carry the name — Padar, a dragon island (Komodo or Rinca) and Pink Beach — but a 3D2N itinerary stops at 8 to 10 places in total. The extra stops are snorkel sites and overnight anchorages such as Manjarite, Kalong, Karang Makassar, Siaba and Kanawa.

How many islands can you visit in one day in Komodo?

A one-day speedboat tour realistically reaches 4 to 6 stops with 2 or 3 landings, giving 3.5 to 5 hours on land. Padar, Pink Beach and a short dragon trek is the usual maximum before the return crossing to Labuan Bajo.

Is Padar Island part of Komodo National Park?

Yes. Padar is the third-largest island in the park, alongside Komodo and Rinca. The park covers about 1,817 km², was UNESCO-listed in 1991, and holds more than 1,000 reef fish species and over 250 coral species.

Do you actually land on Taka Makassar?

Only when the tide allows. Taka Makassar is a crescent sandbar that submerges on higher water, so it appears on itineraries as a stop but is a landing on perhaps half of visits. Crews check the tide table the night before.

Is a 3D2N enough to see the main Komodo islands?

Yes for the headline sights. Three days covers Padar, one dragon island, Pink Beach and a manta attempt without rushing. Four days is the upgrade if you want both dragon islands or want to add diving.
