Can You See Padar Sunrise and Manta Point on the Same Trip?

August 1, 2026

8 min read

Yes — Padar sunrise and Manta Point sit on the same day 2 of the standard 3D2N route, about six to eight hours apart. Padar is climbed at first light, then the boat runs 1–1.5 hours to Pink Beach, 0.5–1 hour to the dragon island, and 0.5–1 hour to Karang Makassar, the shallow manta cleaning area usually reached late morning to mid-afternoon.

This is the question that separates people who have read an itinerary from people who have read a brochure. Sunrise on a ridge and mantas in open water sound like two different trips. They are the same day, and the reason is entirely geographic: Padar sits at the southern end of the central strait, Karang Makassar in the middle of it, and the boat is sailing north through both.

Day 2 hour by hour

Time (indicative) Where What happens Leg to next stop
04:00–04:30 Padar anchorage Wake-up, tender ashore
05:00–07:00 Padar ridge Climb, sunrise, descent, back aboard 1–1.5 hours
08:00–09:30 Pink Beach Breakfast under way, beach landing, shallow snorkel 0.5–1 hour
10:00–12:00 Komodo or Rinca Ranger-led dragon trek 0.5–1 hour
12:30–14:30 Karang Makassar (Manta Point) Drift snorkel over the cleaning station 20–30 min
14:30–15:30 Taka Makassar Sandbar stop if the tide allows 1–1.5 hours
16:30–17:30 Siaba or a sheltered bay Anchor for the night

Sailing-leg durations are operational norms for a motorised phinisi; open-trip wooden boats run slower. Only the Labuan Bajo–Kelor leg (about one hour) is verified across multiple published sources.

Why the order is fixed and what can move

Padar must be first because the light dies on that ridge. The dragon trek must be inside ranger hours. What genuinely floats is the pair at the end — Karang Makassar and Taka Makassar swap routinely depending on the state of the tide, because the sandbar only exists on lower water and the manta drift works better when there is some flow. If your crew announces a swap at breakfast, that is competence, not chaos.

Will you actually see mantas?

Nobody can promise a wild animal. What can be stated honestly is where the probability sits. Karang Makassar, the shallow site most itineraries label “Manta Point”, runs 8–18 m deep with a gentle to moderate drift, is suitable for all levels including snorkellers, and holds mantas year-round. The densest aggregations are reported December to March, when plankton-rich water pushes through — which is exactly the rainy season most brochures call low season. Manta Alley in the south is the higher-density site, with reports of 20 to 50 or more animals on good days, but it is a diving site with moderate to strong current and swell, not a stop on a standard island-hopping day.

Site Depth Current Suitable for Manta season
Karang Makassar / Manta Point 8–18 m Gentle to moderate drift All levels, snorkellers included Year-round, peak Dec–Mar
Manta Alley (south) 5–25 m Moderate to strong, swell Intermediate to advanced divers Peak Dec–Mar; reports of 20–50+ on good days
Mawan 10–25 m Moderate to strong Intermediate to advanced divers Cleaning station, seasonal

What breaks the combination

  • A day trip from Labuan Bajo. There is not enough daylight to be at Padar for first light and still reach Karang Makassar with a usable tide — day tours pick one end of that chain.
  • A late Padar start. Descending at 08:30 rather than 07:00 pushes the whole day back and the manta stop into worse light.
  • A long dragon trek. The long Rinca or Komodo trails add 30–45 minutes, which usually comes out of the manta stop.
  • Full-moon spring tides, when flow through the strait is at its strongest and the snorkel window is shorter.

If mantas are the priority, change the trip, not the day

Guests who care more about mantas than about the ridge photograph should ask for a 4D3N. The extra day buys a second attempt at Karang Makassar at a different tide state, which roughly doubles the chance of a good encounter without changing anything else about the route. On a private charter the crew can also reverse the day: dragons first, mantas at the better tide, Padar the following dawn.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Padar and Manta Point in one day?

Yes. Both sit on day 2 of the standard 3D2N route, about six to eight hours apart: Padar at first light, then Pink Beach, the dragon trek, and Karang Makassar late morning to mid-afternoon.

Where is Manta Point in Komodo?

Most itineraries use the name for Karang Makassar, a shallow 8–18 m cleaning area in the central strait with gentle to moderate drift, suitable for snorkellers. Manta Alley in the south is a separate, deeper, current-swept dive site.

What month is best for mantas in Komodo?

December to March is the reported peak, when plankton-rich water moves through the strait. Mantas are present year-round at Karang Makassar, so a trip in any month has a genuine chance.

Can snorkellers see mantas or do you need to dive?

Snorkellers can. Karang Makassar runs 8–18 m with a gentle to moderate drift and is used for both snorkelling and entry-level diving. Manta Alley, the higher-density site, is for certified divers only.

Does a day trip from Labuan Bajo cover both?

Rarely well. A day tour cannot be at Padar for first light and still reach Karang Makassar on a usable tide, so it picks one end of the chain. An overnight trip is what puts both on the same day.
