For 2027, the strongest island-hopping windows are April–June and September–November: calm seas, good visibility, shoulder pricing. July–August is peak on both price and crowds. December–March is monsoon and the reported manta peak. Full moons fall on 22 Jan, 21 Feb, 22 Mar, 21 Apr, 20 May, 19 Jun, 18 Jul, 17 Aug, 16 Sep, 15 Oct, 14 Nov and 14 Dec 2027 (WITA) — those weeks bring the strongest tidal flow.

Most Komodo calendars stop at “dry season is better”. This one adds the two things that actually change your day on the water: the moon, which drives the current through the straits, and the pricing bands, which move on a different schedule from the weather.

The 2027 full moons, and why they matter

MonthFull moon 2027 (WITA)Spring-tide week runs roughlyEffect on the itinerary
January22 Jan, 20:1819–25 JanStrongest flow; shorter drift snorkels
February21 Feb, 07:2418–24 FebSame; Taka Makassar swings widest
March22 Mar, 18:4519–25 MarSame
April21 Apr, 06:2818–24 AprGood month, but expect firmer current that week
May20 May, 19:0017–23 MaySame
June19 Jun, 08:4616–22 JunSame
July18 Jul, 23:4615–21 JulPeak crowds plus spring tides — the busiest water of the year
August17 Aug, 15:3014–20 AugSame
September16 Sep, 07:0513–19 SepExcellent month; time the manta stop with the crew
October15 Oct, 21:4812–18 OctStrong value window
November14 Nov, 11:2711–17 NovEarliest sunrises of the year
December14 Dec, 00:1011–17 DecMonsoon returning; holiday pricing from about 20 Dec

Full-moon instants computed astronomically and converted to WITA (UTC+8). Spring tides run for a few days either side of both full and new moon, so new-moon weeks behave similarly.

Spring tides are not a reason to avoid a week. They mean bigger water movement: better drift at Karang Makassar for confident snorkellers, wider exposure and deeper submersion at Taka Makassar, and a crew more likely to reorder day 2. Neap weeks — around the first and last quarters — are the calmer, gentler option for nervous swimmers and families.

What to book, and when

  • July–August and the Christmas–New Year window: book six to twelve months out. Private double cabins go first.
  • April–June and September–November: three to six months is normally comfortable.
  • January–March: bookable much later, but build in a contingency day and accept that the route may change.
  • If mantas are the priority, target December to March and ask for a 4D3N so you get two attempts at Karang Makassar.
  • If a calm sea is the priority, target April to June or September to November and avoid the spring-tide week if anyone gets seasick.

The three dates that decide the trip

Pick your month for the sea, your week for the moon, and your format for the hours ashore. Get those three right and the itinerary largely takes care of itself: 3D2N gives 8 to 11 hours on land against 3.5 to 5 on a day trip, 4D3N adds a second manta window or both dragon islands, and park entry stays a flat IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor under PP 36/2024 regardless of which week you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Komodo in 2027?

April to June and September to November combine calm seas, good visibility and shoulder pricing. September is often the single strongest month. July and August have peak crowds and the highest prices.

When are the full moons in Komodo in 2027?

22 Jan, 21 Feb, 22 Mar, 21 Apr, 20 May, 19 Jun, 18 Jul, 17 Aug, 16 Sep, 15 Oct, 14 Nov and 14 Dec 2027, in WITA. Spring tides run for a few days either side of both full and new moon.

Does the full moon affect a Komodo boat trip?

Yes, through tidal range. Spring-tide weeks bring stronger flow: a livelier drift at Karang Makassar, a wider swing at the Taka Makassar sandbar, and a higher chance the crew reorders day 2. Neap weeks are gentler.

When is manta season in Komodo?

Mantas are present at Karang Makassar year-round, with the reported peak from December to March when plankton-rich water moves through. That window overlaps the monsoon, so it trades sea state for sightings.

How far ahead should you book a 2027 Komodo trip?

Six to twelve months for July–August and the Christmas–New Year window, three to six months for the shoulder seasons, and much later for January–March — though that period needs a contingency day for weather.
